The town of Słubice lies on the Polish-German border about 90 km from Berlin, straddling many transport routes of trans-European importance. The commune of Słubice has three border crossings to serve border traffic: one in the town of Słubice itself (for passenger traffic), the others in Kunowice (for railway traffic) and Świecko (for passenger and freight traffic, with a fright customs terminal). The customs terminal is situated near the Kostrzyn-Słubice Special Economic Zone which offers special incentives to investors.

As a result of border location, most local businesses serve international tourists, forwarders or border traffic in general, conduct trade or practice small-scale crafts. There are two bazaars in the town.

Słubice is set in a region characterized by great natural advantages. The commune is surrounded by the extensive Rzepin Forest (Puszcza Rzepińska) which is acknowledged as one of the most important hunting centre in Europe. Local rivers and lakes attract lovers of water sports.

Słubice is also one of the smallest university town in Europe, with its Collegium Polonicum - a common scientific unit of the Mickiewicz University of Poznań and the Viadrina European University of Frankfurt on the Oder.
